Apply for a UK Ancestry Visa Extension with expert help from our immigration solicitors. Fast, fixed-fee service with Super Priority 24-hour decision available.

If you are in the UK on a UK Ancestry visa but do not yet qualify for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR), you may be eligible to apply for an extension of your UK Ancestry visa. Many applicants who have completed 5 years in the UK as UK Ancestry migrants may prefer to extend their stay rather than apply for ILR.

Eligibility Requirements for UK Ancestry Visa Extension

To qualify for a ancestry visa UK extension, you must meet the following criteria:

  • You must not be in breach of immigration laws, except where paragraph 39E of the Immigration Rules applies (which may disregard certain periods of overstaying)
  • You must be in the UK on a UK Ancestry visa
  • You must be a Commonwealth citizen
  • You must be 17 years old or over
  • You must provide evidence that one of your grandparents was born in the UK or Islands, and that they are your blood grandparent or grandparent by legal adoption recognised in the UK
  • You must be able and intend to work (including employment, self-employment, or voluntary work)
  • You must be able to maintain and accommodate yourself and any dependants without recourse to public funds.

Maintenance and Accommodation Requirement

Under paragraph 186(v) of the Immigration Rules, applicants must show they can support and house themselves and their dependants without public funds.

Acceptable supporting documents may include:

  • Recent payslips (typically covering 3 months)
  • Bank statements or building society passbooks
  • P60s
  • Evidence of self-employment or other income (e.g. rental property)
  • Tenancy agreement or mortgage statements

There is no fixed list of documents—each case is assessed on its individual merits. As a guide, if you are in paid work or have savings above the Universal Credit threshold, you will likely satisfy this requirement.
