What Are Skilled Worker Visa Requirements UK In 2026?

If you are planning to work in the United Kingdom as an international professional, the Skilled Worker Visa is the primary route available to you. But 2026 has brought some of the most significant changes to this visa route in years — from higher salary thresholds and tougher English language standards to a higher skill level bar. This comprehensive guide covers everything you need to know about the UK Skilled Worker Visa requirements in 2026, including eligibility, costs, the application process, and the path to settlement.

New rules for Skilled Worker visa: starting from 8 January 2026, the English requirement is increased to B2 on the CEFR scale, where an English test is required.

The UK Skilled Worker visa allows eligible applicants to stay in the UK to do an eligible job with an approved sponsor/employer.

What Is the UK Skilled Worker Visa?

The Skilled Worker Visa is the UK’s main immigration route for overseas nationals who have a job offer from a licensed UK employer. It replaced the old Tier 2 (General) visa in December 2020 and operates under a points-based system, meaning applicants must score enough points across a set of mandatory and tradeable criteria to qualify.

Unlike many visa categories, the Skilled Worker Visa has no annual cap on numbers. As long as you meet all the requirements and your employer holds a valid sponsor licence, you can apply at any point throughout the year.

The visa can be granted for up to five years, after which you can apply to extend it or — once you have accumulated five continuous years of lawful residence in the UK — apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR), which is the UK’s form of permanent residency.

Key Changes to the Skilled Worker Visa in 2026

Before diving into the full requirements, it is important to understand what has changed. The Home Office has introduced several significant updates that affect new applicants in 2026:

  • Minimum salary raised to £41,700/year — up from £38,700 in the previous period
  • English language raised to B2 (CEFR) for new applicants from 8 January 2026 — up from B1
  • Skill level raised to RQF Level 6 (equivalent to a bachelor’s degree) from July 2025, removing 111 jobs from the eligible list
  • Immigration Skills Charge increased by 32% to £1,320 per year for large sponsors, effective December 2025
  • Visa application fees increased by 6–7% from 8 April 2026
  • Social care overseas recruitment closed for new applicants from 22 July 2025

These changes reflect the UK government’s stated ambition to shift toward a high-skill, high-wage economy and reduce reliance on overseas labour in lower-paid roles.

Eligibility Requirements in Detail

1. Job Offer from a Licensed UK Sponsor

You must have a confirmed job offer from a UK employer that is an A-rated licensed sponsor on the Home Office register. Your employer provides a Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS) — an electronic reference number that confirms your role, salary, and employment details. Without a valid CoS, your application cannot proceed.

The Home Office also requires that the vacancy be genuine. Applications will be refused if there is evidence the role was created solely to facilitate a visa application.

2. Eligible Occupation at the Right Skill Level

From July 2025, eligible roles must be at RQF Level 6 or above — equivalent to a bachelor’s degree. This is a significant tightening from the previous requirement of RQF Level 3 (A-level equivalent), which removed over 100 occupation codes from the eligible list.

Limited exceptions remain:

  • Roles on the Immigration Salary List (ISL) or Temporary Shortage List (TSL), which allow some RQF 3–5 roles to qualify until 31 December 2026
  • Roles under transitional arrangements for workers already sponsored before 22 July 2025

Every eligible role must have a Standard Occupational Classification (SOC 2020) code. You can find your occupation code via the government’s CASCOT tool or by asking your employer.

Commonly approved roles include:

  • Healthcare: doctors, nurses, senior care workers, allied health professionals
  • STEM: engineers, data scientists, software developers, research scientists
  • Education: teachers and academic professionals at appropriate grades
  • Finance: accountants, financial analysts, and compliance specialists
  • Architecture and the built environment

3. Minimum Salary Threshold

The general minimum salary in 2026 is £41,700 per year, or the going rate for your specific occupation code — whichever is higher.

Lower thresholds that may apply:

CategoryMinimum Salary
Standard threshold£41,700
Immigration Salary List (shortage occupations)£33,400
New entrant rate70% of the going rate for the role
Healthcare and education (national pay scales apply)The relevant NHS or national pay band rate

From 8 April 2026, sponsors must demonstrate that salary thresholds are met in each individual pay period — a new compliance rule that tightens payroll obligations.

4. English Language Proficiency

From 8 January 2026, first-time Skilled Worker applicants must demonstrate English at CEFR Level B2 (upper-intermediate), replacing the previous B1 requirement. This higher standard applies to all four language skills: reading, writing, speaking, and listening.

You can meet this requirement in four ways:

  • Passing an approved Secure English Language Test (SELT) — such as IELTS for UKVI — at the required B2 band scores
  • Holding a degree-level qualification taught in English — if studied outside the UK, verified through Ecctis (formerly UK NARIC)
  • UK school qualifications — a GCSE, A-level, Scottish National Qualification Level 4 or 5, Scottish Higher or Advanced Higher in English, gained while under 18
  • Nationality exemption — nationals of majority English-speaking countries (including the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Ireland, and others) are exempt

Important distinctions:

  • Applicants extending an existing Skilled Worker visa remain assessed at B1 — no need to retest at B2
  • Applicants for ILR (settlement) are also assessed at B1, not B2, under separate rules
  • If you held a Skilled Worker Visa before 8 January 2026 and are extending or updating it, the B1 standard continues to apply

5. Financial Maintenance

Unless your employer certifies maintenance on the Certificate of Sponsorship, you must demonstrate you have at least £1,270 in your bank account to support yourself for the first month in the UK. These funds must have been held for at least 28 consecutive days prior to your application.

Who Cannot Apply?

There are some restrictions introduced or tightened in 2026:

  • Social care workers (SOC codes 6135/6136 — care workers and senior care workers): overseas recruitment closed from 22 July 2025. No new overseas applications are accepted.
  • Afghan nationals: The Home Office announced in March 2026 that Skilled Worker visas for Afghan nationals will be suspended under a nationality-based “visa brake.”
  • Workers in roles that have been removed from the eligible occupations list due to the RQF Level 6 uplift, where no transitional arrangements apply.

The Application Process: Step by Step

Step 1 — Secure a Job Offer

Your employer must be a licensed UK sponsor. Check the government’s published list of approved sponsors before applying. If your employer is not listed, they can apply for a sponsor licence if they are eligible.

Step 2 — Receive a Certificate of Sponsorship

Once your employer assigns a CoS, you will receive a reference number to include in your visa application.

Step 3 — Check Your Eligibility and Gather Documents

Ensure you meet all the requirements. Key documents typically include:

  • Valid passport or travel document
  • Certificate of Sponsorship reference number
  • Proof of English language proficiency (B2 level)
  • Evidence of financial maintenance (bank statements showing £1,270 for 28 consecutive days, unless your employer certifies maintenance)
  • Criminal record certificates (if required for your role)
  • Educational or professional qualification certificates
  • Tuberculosis test results (if applying from a listed country)

Step 4 — Complete the Online Application

Apply through the official GOV.UK portal. Select the Skilled Worker Visa category and provide your personal information, job and sponsorship details, and intended duration of stay.

Step 5 — Pay the Fees

Pay the visa application fee and the Immigration Health Surcharge at the time of application. These are non-refundable even if the application is refused.

Step 6 — Attend a Biometric Appointment

Attend a Visa Application Centre (VAC) or UKVCAS centre to provide your fingerprints and photograph. In some cases, the ID Check app allows digital submission instead.

Step 7 — Await a Decision

Standard processing times vary by country. Using the priority or super-priority service speeds this up considerably.

Extending Your Skilled Worker Visa In 2026

Your Skilled Worker Visa is granted for up to five years. You can apply to extend it if:

  • You are still employed in the same job (same occupation code)
  • You are still with the same sponsoring employer (or have obtained a new CoS from a new sponsor)
  • You continue to meet the salary and skill requirements

When extending, the English language requirement remains at B1 — you do not need to demonstrate B2 again.

Path to Settlement (ILR) and British Citizenship

After five continuous years on a Skilled Worker Visa (or a combination of Skilled Worker and its predecessor Tier 2 General), you may apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) — permanent residency in the UK.

ILR Requirements

  • Five years of continuous lawful residence
  • No more than 180 days outside the UK in any 12-month period during those five years
  • Ongoing employment with a licensed sponsor in an eligible role
  • Salary still meets the skill level and threshold requirements
  • Pass the Life in the UK Test (covering British history, culture, and civic life)
  • Meet the B1 English language requirement for settlement

ILR application fee from 8 April 2026 is £3,226 per applicant.

Proposed Changes to ILR Timeline

The UK government has proposed extending the ILR qualifying period from 5 years to 10 years. As of May 2026, this change is expected no earlier than Autumn 2026 and has not yet come into force. Under the new “earned settlement” framework, timelines could be shortened based on earnings, public service contributions, or lengthened due to immigration breaches such as overstaying.

British Citizenship

Once you hold ILR, you can apply for British citizenship by naturalisation after a further 12 months of residency — meaning the total journey from first arriving on a Skilled Worker Visa to British citizenship is approximately six years, provided all conditions are met.

Supplementary Employment

Skilled Worker Visa holders are permitted to work an additional up to 20 hours per week in supplementary employment in certain circumstances. The secondary role must be in the same occupation code as your sponsored role, or in an eligible shortage occupation. Check the supplementary employment rules in Appendix Skilled Worker on GOV.UK before taking on additional work.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I switch to a Skilled Worker Visa from inside the UK?

Yes, in most cases. You can switch from a Graduate visa, Student visa, or other eligible routes without leaving the country, as long as you meet all requirements.

Does my employer have to pay the visa costs?

The law requires employers to cover the Certificate of Sponsorship fee, the Immigration Skills Charge, and the Sponsor Licence fee. These cannot be passed on to the worker. The visa application fee and IHS are typically the worker’s responsibility, though many employers cover these as part of a relocation package.

What happens if my employer loses their sponsor licence?

If your sponsor’s licence is revoked, you will normally be given 60 days to find a new licensed employer and obtain a new Certificate of Sponsorship. Failing to do so may result in your visa being curtailed.

Can I change employers on a Skilled Worker Visa?

Yes. You can change employers, but you must obtain a new Certificate of Sponsorship from your new employer and make a new application or update your visa before starting with them.
