New Salary Threshold Raises To £38,700 From £26,200

On 4 December 2023, the UK Government announced a new salary threshold raise to £38,700 from £26,200.

The Home Secretary Cleverly made a statement about the UK Government’s plan to reduce net migration through the following five-point plan which is due to come into force in Spring 2024.

Dependents on health care worker visa

The government will tighten the Health and Care visa, which has seen a significant number of visas granted to care workers and their dependents, by preventing overseas care workers from bringing their dependents to the UK from spring 2024. In addition, care providers in England will now only be able to sponsor migrant workers if they are undertaking activities regulated by the Care Quality Commission.

Foreign worker salary threshold rises to £38,700

The threshold for an application for a skilled worker visa will rise by nearly 50% from £26,200 to £38,700 – although health and care workers will still be able to earn less before applying for the route. The reason behind increasing the salary for a skilled worker visa to £38,700 is to encourage businesses to look to British talent first and invest in their workforce, helping us to deter employers from over-relying on migration, whilst bringing salaries in line with the average full-time salary for these types of jobs.

Salary changes for shortage occupation list

Ending the 20% salary discount for roles on the Shortage Occupation List and reforming the list. The Migration Advisory Committee has been asked to review the occupations on the list in light of the new higher-skilled worker salary threshold. A new immigration salary list (Appendix Immigration Salary List?) with a reduced number of occupations will be published in coordination with the MAC.

The Migration Advisory Committee will review the new list against the increased salary thresholds in order to reduce the number of occupations on the list.

Income requirement for families of British Citizens (spouse visas)

The minimum income requirement for family visas for British citizens and those settled here will also be raised to £38,700.

Changes to Graduate Route

The Home Secretary has asked the MAC to review the graduate route to “prevent abuse and to protect the integrity and quality” of the higher education sector.

Increase in immigration health surcharge

In addition to measures to reduce migration, the government will make sure that migrants coming to the UK make a fair financial contribution so that public services, including the NHS, are not taken advantage of by increasing the annual Immigration Health Surcharge from £624 to £1,035.
