What Are the UK Skilled Worker Visa Requirements?
To qualify for a Skilled Worker visa, you must meet several mandatory criteria:
- Have a job offer from an approved sponsor
- Obtain a Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS)
- Meet the minimum salary requirement
- Have a job at the correct skill level (RQF Level 6+)
- Prove your English language ability
- Show financial maintenance funds (unless exempt)
- Provide a clean criminal record certificate (for certain jobs)
- Meet TB test requirements (for certain countries)
Each of these requirements is examined by the Home Office when deciding your application.
Let’s go through them one by one.

1. Job Offer From a Licensed UK Sponsor
You must have a confirmed job offer from a UK employer that holds a valid UK Sponsor Licence.
Your employer must:
- Be officially approved by the Home Office to hire overseas workers
- Assign you a Certificate of Sponsorship
- Pay you at or above the required salary
- Ensure the job is eligible under the Skilled Worker route
Without a licensed sponsor, you cannot apply for the visa.
2. Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS)
Your employer will issue a Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS) a digital reference number that confirms:
- Your job title
- The occupation code (SOC 2020)
- Salary offered
- Job start date
- Confirmation that the job is genuine and eligible
There are two types:
- Defined CoS for applications made from outside the UK
- Undefined CoS for applicants switching or extending inside the UK
Your application must be submitted within 3 months of the CoS being assigned.
3. Salary Requirements (Updated for 2026)
The minimum salary depends on your job type, job code, and personal circumstances.
Standard Salary Threshold (2026)
You must be paid at least £41,700 per year, or the “going rate” for your occupation whichever is higher.
Common salary options used by applicants:
| Applicant Category | Minimum Salary (2026) |
| Standard applicant | £41,700 |
| PhD relevant to job | £37,500 |
| STEM PhD | £33,400 |
| New entrant (under 26 / student switcher) | £33,400 |
| Transitional workers (sponsored before April 2024) | £31,300 |
| Health & Care Worker visa roles | From £25,000 |
Only your guaranteed basic salary counts. Bonuses, benefits and overtime are excluded.
4. Skill Level Requirement (RQF Level 6)
From July 2025 onwards, all new Skilled Worker roles must meet RQF Level 6 equivalent to graduate-level roles.
This is a major change, as many supervisory and technician jobs that were previously eligible are now excluded unless covered by transitional arrangements.
Your job must:
- Match an eligible SOC 2020 occupation code
- Be at degree level skill standard
- Match the duties described in the code
If the wrong occupation code is used, the application is usually refused.
5. English Language Requirement (B2 From January 2026)
From 8 January 2026, new Skilled Worker applicants must meet CEFR Level B2, equivalent to A-level standard.
Applicants applying before this date, or extending an existing Skilled Worker visa, can still use CEFR Level B1.
You can prove English by:
- Passing an approved Secure English Language Test (SELT)
- Holding a degree taught in English (verified by UK ENIC)
- Being a citizen of a majority English-speaking country
If you met the English requirement in a previous UK visa application, you may not need to prove it again.
6. Financial Maintenance Requirement
You must show you have enough funds to support yourself when you arrive in the UK.
Amount required: £1,270 held for 28 consecutive days.
You do not need to show this if:
- You have lived in the UK for 12+ months on a visa, or
- Your employer certifies your maintenance on the CoS
Dependants require additional funds:
- £285 for a partner
- £315 for first child
- £200 for each additional child
Bank statements must be clear, complete, and correctly dated.
7. Tuberculosis (TB) Test (If Applicable)
Applicants from certain countries must provide a valid TB test certificate from an approved clinic.
This requirement applies mainly to long-term visas such as Skilled Worker.
8. Criminal Record Certificate (For Certain Roles)
If your job is in:
- Healthcare
- Education
- Social care
You must provide a criminal record certificate from each country where you lived for 12+ months in the last 10 years.
9. Genuine Vacancy Requirement
The Home Office must be satisfied that:
- Your job offer is real
- The role is not created solely to facilitate a visa
- Your sponsor has genuine business need
If doubts arise, the application may be refused under the genuineness test.
10. Valid Passport and Travel Documents
Your passport must:
- Be valid
- Have at least one blank page
- Match all your application details
If not, UKVI may delay or refuse your application.
