What are the UK Spouse Visa Requirements 2024?
For a successful UK spouse visa, it is important to meet all the requirement for a spouse visa under Appendix FM of the immigration rules:
- You meet the suitability requirement
- You meet the relationship requirement and you are in a genuine and eligible relationship
- You meet the spouse visa financial requirement of at least £29,000 (this is set to rise and gradually increase to £38,700). However, if you applied for a fiancé, fiancée or proposed civil partner before 11 April 2024, you will only need to meet the previous £18,600 income threshold.
- You meet the English language requirement
- You have suitable accommodation in the UK
A Genuine & Eligible Relationship for UK Spouse Visa
To get a UK spouse visa, you must show that you meet the relationship requirement for UK spouse visa. The main criteria for the Home Office to understand if your relationship is genuine are the following:
- spouse; or
- civil partner; or
- unmarried partner, where the couple have been in a relationship similar to marriage or civil partnership for at least 2 years.
Financial Requirements for UK Spouse Visa 2024
The applicant must provide specified evidence to meet the financial requirement of Appendix FM:
- a specified gross annual income of at least £29,000
- specified savings of:
- (i) £16,000; and
- (ii) additional savings of an amount equivalent to 2.5 times the amount which is the difference between the gross annual income from the sources listed in paragraph E-ECP.3.2.(a)- (d) and the total amount required under paragraph E-ECP.3.1.(a); or
- (c) the requirements in paragraph E-ECP.3.3. being met.

UK spouse visa English language requirement
The English language requirement is one of the most important UK spouse visa requirements. To get a Spouse Visa to stay in the UK, the non-British applicant must prove the Home Office to be able to speak and understand English to a proficient standard.
To need to demonstrate your proficiency, you must either:
- Have passed an approved English language test to the required level (A1 or higher, depending on your circumstances).
- Hold a degree from a recognised institution, which was taught or researched in English.
- Be from a country where English is the first spoken language.
UK Spouse Visa Accommodation Requirement
To qualify for leave as a partner on the 5-year route to settlement the applicant must meet the accommodation requirement in Appendix FM – Family Life as a partner or parent.
The applicant must provide evidence that there will be adequate accommodation, without recourse to public funds, for the family (including other family members who are not included in the application but who live in the same household), which the family own or occupy exclusively. Accommodation will not be regarded as adequate if:
- it is, or will be, overcrowded
- it contravenes public health regulations

As a foreign national, you can apply for a UK partner and spouse visa as long as your partner based in the UK:
- Is a British or Irish citizen (either by birth or naturalisation)
- Has settled in the UK and has Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR), permanent residence, or EU Settled Status
- Has refugee status or humanitarian protection in the UK
- Has a Turkish Businessperson visa or Turkish Worker visa
You must intend to live together in the UK after you move here (if you’re not here already), and you will also need to provide evidence of your genuine and subsisting relationship.
