Why does my BRP card expire on 31 December 2024?

If you have been granted permission to enter or remain in the UK or even ILR,  you may have noticed that your Biometric Residence Permit (BRP) expiry date is 31 December 2024.

If your BRP Card expires on 31 December 2024, you don’t need to make an application for a BRP renewal.

You may be thinking why the visa expiry date is different than the BRP card expiry date? Your BRP card will expire on 31 December 2024 because the Home Office is moving from physical BRP cards to digital immigration status. The Home Office has confirmed that from 1 January 2025, you will no longer need a BRP card and you will be able to prove your immigration status online via the ‘view and prove your immigration status’ service.

What is a BRP Card?

A Biometric Residence Permit (BRP) is a physical card that confirms your immigration status in the UK and any conditions of your stay. A BRP will feature your name, the date it was issued and when it will expire, your date of birth, and your place of birth. In addition, your BRP will include biometric information, including your fingerprints and a photo of your face.

what to do If your BRP expires on 31 December 2024?

You do not need to tell UKVI if your BRP expires on 31 December 2024 but your immigration status (for example, your visa) allows you to stay longer.

You will not need a BRP from 1 January 2025. You’ll be able to prove your immigration status online, without a BRP.

UKVI will update their information on how to prove your immigration status in early 2024. You do not need to do anything and your immigration status will not be affected.

Replace your BRP Card with E-Visa after 31 december 2024

To prove your immigration status after this date you will need to replace your BRP with an eVisa. The expiration of your BRP card does not affect your immigration status. However, starting in 2025, the way you prove your immigration status will change.

What do I need to do now?

Please take the following steps now:

Create a UKVI account to access your eVisa, which will replace your BRP. To create your UKVI account, you will need: Your date of birth, Your BRP Number, Your passport (if you do not have a BRP)Access to an email address and phone number, Access to a smartphone.

You should create your UKVI account at: https://www.gov.uk/get-access-evisa.

What to do if your BRP Card expires before 31 December 2024?

If your BRP expires before 31st December 2024 and you have Indefinite Leave to Remain, then you will need to apply for a BRP renewal as per usual from within the UK.
